1 The pitch-based carbon fiber brief development history
The research on pitch-based carbon fiber began in the late 1950s, and in the early 1960s, it was successfully developed by Gunma University of Japan. In the 1970s, UCC developed the mesophase pitch-based carbon fiber (high-performance pitch-based carbon fiber) which was industrialized in the early 1980s. The 1980s was a golden period for the development of pitch-based carbon fiber, and then experienced a period of difficult development, later it was integrated into several strong production enterprises. Now the major manufacturers are Nippon Graphite, Mitsubishi and Cytec. Due to the characteristics of raw materials and technology, pitch-based carbon fibers are structurally different from PAN-based carbon fibers. The main performance is that the modulus is as high as 900 GPa and the thermal conductivity can reach 1000 W/ (m· K), much higher than PAN-based carbon fiber. These excellent properties make mesophase pitch-based carbon fibers an irreplaceable role in some high-end areas.
